About Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a widely used treatment for thread veins and spider veins, the fine red, blue or purple veins that often appear close to the surface of the skin. At our Loughborough clinic, it is carried out by a registered nurse prescriber following a face-to-face consultation, so your suitability can be assessed properly before anything is booked. It aims to reduce the appearance of visible surface veins, most commonly on the legs. Many people choose it to feel more comfortable showing their legs in warmer months or in clothing they might otherwise avoid.

What sclerotherapy can help with

Sclerotherapy is typically considered for small surface veins that are a cosmetic concern rather than a medical one. It may help improve the appearance of:

  • Thread veins and spider veins on the legs
  • Small clusters of fine red or blue surface veins
  • Isolated veins that are visible through the skin

It focuses on the appearance of visible surface veins. It is not a treatment for underlying venous disease, and your consultation helps identify whether sclerotherapy is an appropriate option for you or whether another route would be more suitable.

How sclerotherapy works

A very fine needle is used to inject a small amount of solution directly into the targeted vein. The solution is intended to irritate the vein wall so that the vein gradually closes and fades from view over the following weeks. Because the response is gradual, results usually develop over time rather than immediately, and more than one session is often needed depending on the number and size of the veins being treated. Your nurse prescriber will talk you through what is realistic for your particular veins during the consultation.

Treatment options

We offer a range of options so the treatment can be matched to the size of the area and the amount of work involved:

  • Single treatment, small surface area: suited to a limited or localised patch of veins.
  • Single treatment, large surface area: for a more extensive spread of veins in one session.
  • Course of 3: a planned series where the area typically benefits from staged sessions.
  • Course of 6: a more comprehensive course for larger or more persistent areas.

Which option suits you is decided together at your consultation. Areas often respond gradually, so a course can allow progress to be reviewed between sessions.

Your consultation and what to expect

Every treatment begins with a face-to-face consultation with a registered nurse prescriber. This is where your veins are examined, your medical history is discussed, and your suitability is assessed. You will have the chance to ask questions and to talk through what you would like to achieve. If sclerotherapy is appropriate, your nurse will explain the likely number of sessions, what happens on the day, and the aftercare involved. There is no obligation to proceed, and nothing is rushed.

Is it right for me?

Sclerotherapy may be an option for adults who are bothered by the appearance of small surface veins and are in good general health. It is not suitable for everyone, and certain medical conditions, medications, or circumstances such as pregnancy may mean it is not recommended for you at this time. The only way to know whether it is appropriate is through a consultation, where your individual circumstances can be reviewed and honest, personalised advice given.

Aftercare

Aftercare is tailored to you and explained on the day, but general guidance may include:

  • Wearing compression stockings for a period, if advised
  • Gentle walking and keeping mobile, if advised
  • Avoiding strenuous exercise, very hot baths, and saunas for a short time
  • Following any specific instructions your nurse gives for your treated area

Your nurse prescriber will give you personalised aftercare advice based on the area treated and your own response.
