What to Expect at Your First Aesthetic Consultation

4 min read

Feeling nervous about your first aesthetic consultation? Here's everything you need to know about what happens and how to prepare for your visit.

What to Expect at Your First Aesthetic Consultation

Your first aesthetic consultation can feel a little daunting, especially if you're unsure what to expect. I completely understand — many of my clients tell me they were nervous before their first visit but felt completely at ease once we started talking.

Let me walk you through exactly what happens during a consultation, so you can arrive feeling prepared and confident.

A Relaxed, Private Environment

First things first: our clinics are designed to feel welcoming, not clinical. Whether you visit us in Loughborough or Cheltenham, you'll find a calm, private space where you can speak openly about your concerns.

There's no rush, no pressure, and absolutely no judgement. This is your time to explore options and ask questions.

The Consultation Process

Getting to Know You

We'll start with a friendly chat about what's brought you in today. I want to understand:

  • What concerns you about your appearance
  • What results you're hoping to achieve
  • Any treatments you've had before (if any)
  • Your lifestyle and commitments

This helps me understand your goals and expectations, so I can give you honest, realistic advice.

Medical History Discussion

Next, we'll go through your medical history. This is a crucial step for your safety and ensures any treatments we recommend are suitable for you. I'll ask about:

  • Any medical conditions
  • Medications you're taking
  • Allergies
  • Previous cosmetic treatments
  • Your general health

Everything you share is confidential and helps me provide the safest, most effective care.

Facial Assessment

I'll then take time to assess your face, looking at:

  • Your facial structure and proportions
  • Skin quality and condition
  • Areas of concern you've mentioned
  • How your face moves when you smile, frown, and relax

This assessment helps me understand exactly what we're working with and identify the best approach for your goals.

Treatment Discussion

Based on our conversation and assessment, I'll explain:

  • Which treatments might help achieve your goals
  • What each treatment involves
  • Realistic expectations for results
  • Any risks or side effects
  • How long results typically last
  • Costs and number of sessions needed

I believe in educating my clients, so you'll never feel confused or uninformed. If something isn't right for you, I'll tell you — I'd rather turn away work than recommend something that won't benefit you.

Questions Are Encouraged

Please come prepared with questions! There's no such thing as a silly question when it comes to your face. Common things clients ask include:

  • "Will it hurt?"
  • "How long is the recovery?"
  • "Will people notice I've had something done?"
  • "How natural will it look?"
  • "What if I don't like the results?"

I'm happy to answer anything you're wondering about.

No Pressure — Ever

Here's something important: you don't have to book a treatment at your consultation.

Some people leave with a treatment booked for the same day. Others go away to think about it and come back weeks or months later. Both are absolutely fine.

Good aesthetic medicine isn't about quick sales — it's about helping you make informed decisions you feel confident about. Take all the time you need.

How to Prepare

To make the most of your consultation:

  1. Think about your goals — What would you like to change or improve?
  2. Bring photos — If you have pictures of looks you like (or don't like), bring them along
  3. List your medications — Including supplements and over-the-counter products
  4. Note any questions — Write them down so you don't forget
  5. Come with a clean face — No makeup makes assessment easier (though it's not essential)

After Your Consultation

Whether you decide to proceed with treatment or not, you'll leave with:

  • A clear understanding of your options
  • Written information about any recommended treatments
  • My contact details for follow-up questions
  • No pressure and no hard sell

Many clients tell me that just having the consultation — understanding what's possible and what's not — gives them a sense of clarity and confidence, even if they decide not to have treatment.
